Hoeness stood down as Bayern Munich president on Friday after pleading guilty to charges of tax evasion earlier in the week. The 62-year-old has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison but Guardiola hopes the man who persuaded him to join the Bundesliga champions in 2013 will return to the club at some point in the future.
"I've only been here nine months, but I've seen enough to realise that Uli is extremely important here," Guardiola told Sky television. "He's made a mistake and he has admitted to it. I hope I can still be here when he comes back." Bayern Munich won their first match without Hoeness at the helm on Saturday, a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena.
The result leaves the European champions with a 50-game unbeaten run and 23 points clear at the top of the German top-flight, with a chance to win the league in their next match with a record-breaking eight fixtures to spare. "We only need a few points now," said Guardiola. "It's not important when (we win it), but that the players keep this positive tension."
