Manchester City move up to second after Edin Dzeko's brace and a Yaya Toure strike handed them a 3-0 derby win at Manchester United.City went in front inside the first minute at Old Trafford through Dzeko as the visitors made a strong start. United did improve but the game was effectively over early in the second half when the Bosnian grabbed his second of the match and Toure put the icing on the cake in the final minute. The result leaves City just three points behind leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table but Manuel Pellegrini's men have two games in hand. United remain down in seventh and well off the pace as they have lost three successive home games against their rivals and an unprecedented sixth Old Trafford Premier League reverse so far this season.
City got off to a flying start when they took the lead after 43 seconds as Rafael initially did well to deny David Silva a certain goal inside the area. United couldn't fully clear and Fernandinho played in Samir Nasri down the left side of the box and his right-foot strike hit the inside of the post and rolled across the area for Dzeko to fire in from close range. City continued to dominate the early proceedings and Silva's ball in from the left to Dzeko almost resulted in a second for the big striker, but David De Gea got down to his left to make a good save. On the half-hour Marouane Fellaini somehow escaped a red card for what looked like a blatant elbow on Pablo Zabaleta but the referee brandished a yellow. United did get back into the contest as the half progressed with Juan Mata wasting their best chance on 40 minutes as he blazed over the bar from the middle of the box as Rafael's cross in from the right fell to his feet. Fernandinho should have made it 2-0 on 52 minutes but he diverted the ball over the bar from close range after Vincent Kompany flicked on a Nasri right-wing corner. United failed to take heed of the warning as City did score from a similar Nasri corner just four minutes later as Dzeko got ahead of Rio Ferdinand at the near post and coolly side-footed a first time volley high into the net. United tried to force a way back into the game with Danny Welbeck going the closest on 72 minutes with a neat back flick from Shinji Kagawa's right-wing cross but Hart made the save at his front post. Rooney fired in a free kick from wide out on the left which Hart did well to punch clear on 81 minutes. However City sealed a comfortable win in the 90th minute when James Milner teed up Toure just inside the United area and he set himself up before hammering a low strike into the far corner of the net.
