Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that they have offered Ilkay Gundogan a new contract in a bid to keep him at the club.
The midfielder has played just once this season due to a back injury but his stock has remained extremely high, with both Real Madrid and Manchester United thought to be interested in signing him. With just 12 months remaining on his current deal, speculation has continued to build about his future and with Robert Lewandowski set to join rivals Bayern Munich in the summer, Dortmund are understandably keen to ensure one of their other stars isn't able to leave on a free transfer next summer.
Keeping Gundogan will be key to helping Jurgen Klopp rebuild his team and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has now confirmed the 23-year-old has been offered fresh terms on his contract and they are waiting to hear back from the Germany international.
"Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad we want to keep at our club," he told Sport-BILD. "We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it. "And we are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply."
